The Concert

Big questions asked in a big piece – Gustav Mahler’s glorious ‘Resurrection’ Symphony – as the LSO celebrates Michael Tilson Thomas’ 80th birthday.

The Music

Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony was composed over six years and is written on an epic scale for a huge orchestra of over 100 musicians, chorus and soloists.

The music takes us from a solemn march to an inspirational, cathartic finale, with interludes of gentle nostalgia, disturbing visions and the simple, angelic beauty of a mezzo-soprano solo along the way.

The Performers

The LSO is joined by Michael Tilson Thomas for a celebration of our Conductor Laureate’s 80th birthday, and a relationship spanning over five decades. ‘The LSO has been part of my life since I was 24 years old,’ he says. ‘It is always a joy to be reunited and to make great music together.’

The LSO, MTT and Mahler are made for each other, especially in one of the composer’s most powerful symphonies. In Michael Tilson Thomas’ own words, ‘I think Mahler does change the life of all those who play his music.’

The whole thing sounds as though it came to us from some other world … One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel’s wings to the highest heights.
