The Concert

Wynton Marsalis, Sir Antonio Pappano and the LSO blend jazz, blues and classical music in a crossover collaboration with the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra.

The Music

Wynton Marsalis’ Symphony No 4 ’The Jungle’ is a wild and brilliant portrait of New York City in all its dazzling, high-pressure, cosmopolitan glory. Featuring glimpses of ragtime and elements of popular dance music, its six movements combine rapid and hard-swinging fast passages with poignant blues-tinged melodies and colourful, plushly orchestrated jazz chords.

The ‘La Esquina’ movement pays homage the city’s Afro-Latin culture while the work’s finale sees wailing brass spin bold melodies over rhythmic riffs. Like the (second) greatest city in the world, this intoxicating cacophony of sounds, cultures and identities will leave you thinking.

The Performers

Wynton Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed trumpeter, composer, bandleader, teacher, and music director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has created a vital body of work that places him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra comprises 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today and performs a vast repertoire across the globe.

New York City is the most fluid, pressure-packed, and cosmopolitan metropolis the modern world has ever seen.
