The Concert

Dark and stormy drama from Maconchy and Williams, transcendence from Vaughan Williams – and Britten’s ‘musical espresso’.

The Music

Maconchy injected a particular intensity into her chamber music. Her Violin Sonata No 2 – conceived during World War II – is no exception. Williams’ Sonata throbs with emotion, from its jazzy opener, to soulful middle, to fiery finale. Britten, meanwhile, gave his Reveille to violinist Antonio Broso to help him get going in the mornings. From a sleepy start the violin gradually builds up a magnificent head of steam. Vaughan Williams’ Lark Ascending is one of the most popular classical pieces today, but it startled the early critics with its breathtaking originality.

The Performers

Violinist Geneva Lewis is known for her elegant, searching style which is perfect for this programme of deceptively unconventional pieces. Sam Armstrong, described as a ‘pianist of splendid originality’, is the ideal collaborator.

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
