The Concert

Bach and Bartók at their most joyfully inventive, performed with a perfect blend of precision and panache.

The Music

Bach’s Two-Part Inventions, composed in the 1720s, were intended as teaching aids for his keyboard pupils. Bartók, more than two centuries later, had a similar aim with his 44 Duos, nearly all of them based on folk tunes. Yet these collections are far from dry exercises.

Bach’s pithy Inventions range from playful to deeply melancholy, and are (suitably) packed with invention. Apparently simple, they in fact require great skill to perform.

Bartók’s Duos get progressively harder throughout the volume: we can hear the difference between the charming simplicity of No 11 and the more advanced technique needed for the later 42 and 43. In between Bartók has imaginative fun with fairy tales and buzzing, bothersome mosquitoes, his mood encompassing burlesque as well as sorrow. But above all, these duos dance.

The Performers

The celebrated violist Antoine Tamestit is joined by Alexandra Preucil on violin. Both performers are well-known for their communicative, expressive styles, essential for such intimate, intricate repertoire
