The Concert

A thoroughly elegant concert for piano and wind instruments: grace under fire from Hindemith, youthful high spirits from Beethoven – and sheer bliss from Poulenc.

The Music

In 1936, the Nazi Party objected strongly to Hindemith’s music, describing him as an ‘atonal noisemaker’. His Flute Sonata, composed that year, was banned along with the rest of his works. This most stylish and skilful piece was eventually premiered in the US, the following year.

In Paris, some twelve years earlier, a young Poulenc was weaving magic for oboe, bassoon and piano, completing his Trio in 1926. After a declamatory start, its sparkling opening movement and romping finale surround a slow movement of absolute melting beauty.

Beethoven’s spirited Quintet for Piano and Winds, composed in 1796, predates the composer’s mighty run of symphonies, and finds him in a fascinating musical position: seeking his own voice, yet somewhat in thrall to Mozart, who had died only five years earlier.

The Performers

Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor of the LSO, presents a special chamber concert alongside friends, showcasing a dynamic afternoon of music-making.

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
