The Concert

Warmth, wit and passion from Shostakovich in two of his greatest chamber works.

The Concert

A selection of music performed by LSO Chief Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano on the piano and a string quartet of LSO musicians, as part of a series of BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts.

The Music

Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata (1934) is one of the most lyrical and emotionally rich pieces he ever wrote. It was composed in a period of turmoil while the composer was having an intense affair. Perhaps partly as a result, the music is ardent, urgent and often deeply romantic.

His Piano Quintet in G minor, written six years later, is a suavely confident and stirring work – from its opening piano salvo to its lushly scored writing for string instruments, to its graceful handling of a huge range of musical moods.

The Performers

Sir Antonio Pappano turns to the keyboard, joined by a quartet of LSO string players, Principals and Co-Principals of the Orchestra, for what promises to be a spellbinding concert.

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3
