The Concert
Elisabeth Brauß revels in Sergei Prokofiev’s pianistic possibilities and joins Quatuor Arod for César Franck’s passionate Piano Quintet.
Sergei Prokofiev’s Ten Pieces are early works but already demonstrate the dazzling variety of his ideas. They offer a ten-course tasting menu of the piano, from Classical elegance to Modern dissonance, with many flavours in-between. Maître d’ for this feast is Elisabeth Brauß, whose recording of Prokofiev prompted Gramophone to describe her ‘instrumental mastery wed to musical depth and sensitivity’.
Brauß joins Quatuor Arod in César Franck’s Piano Quintet, one of his most popular works. There’s storm and passion from the start. On its premiere in 1880, its pianist and dedicatee Saint-Saëns walked off at the end in disgust – the erotic charge of Franck’s composition had apparently been inspired by the same student to whom Saint-Saëns had unsuccessfully proposed. Fortunately, music outlives jealousy and psychodrama, and we expect that Brauß and the Arod will leave the stage together!
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
