The Concert
Cellist Andrei Ioniță gives the first of three concerts, joining pianist Alim Beisembayev to perform expressive masterpieces by Debussy, Fauré and Brahms.
The ethereal beauty and improvisatory freshness of Claude Debussy’s Cello Sonata quickly identify it as French, although it was given its world premiere in London in 1916, towards the end of the composer’s life, as he struggled with cancer. Renowned for bringing the brushstrokes of Impressionism from the canvas to the musical score, Debussy nevertheless described this work as ‘almost classical form in the best sense of the word’.
If the emotion of Debussy and Fauré is veiled, Johannes Brahms wears his heart on his sleeve from the outset. We seem to walk in on an argument between cello and piano, and the frank exchanges continue across four movements and through many moods, but ultimately resolve in triumphant togetherness.
Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
