The Concert

Aleksey Semenenko, Andrei Ioniță and Alim Beisembayev offer their perspectives on youthful Piano Trios by Brahms and Shostakovich.

Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his First Piano Trio at 17 as he recovered from tuberculosis and felt the flush of first love. He had only recently studied Brahms and although we can hear the spiky rhythms and dark humour that would become the Russian composer’s trademark, he also harks back to the yearning Romanticism of his predecessor with expressive themes and passionate climaxes.

Seventy years earlier, Johannes Brahms was barely older than Shostakovich when he produced his First Piano Trio. His future personality shines through, too – noble melodies, glorious textures and vital fast passages.

As pianists, both composers understood the power of the piano trio to combine three unique but complementary personalities. This lunchtime, these voices belong to Andrei Ioniță, following his solo Bach last week, violinist Aleksey Semenenko and pianist Alim Beisembayev, all three alums from the BBC New Generation Artists scheme.
