The Concert

Islington Choral Society with the orchestra of the London Choral Sinfonia present Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. This multicultural fusion of sacred texts, plainsong, medieval melody, martial tones and poignant silence offers visions of hope, peace and redemption for our troubled times.

First performed in 2000, The Armed Man is an immediately accessible and memorable work that blends the traditional Catholic Mass and biblical psalms with a Muslim Call to Prayer, the Hindu Mahabharata, poetry by Dryden and Kipling, and a poem from a Japanese witness to Hiroshima. Battle, death, destruction and mourning evolve into a declaration of peace and an affirmation that sorrow, pain, and death will be overcome.

Michael Waldron conducts this enduring work from one of our most popular living composers.
