The Concert

British chamber music at its finest: from witty Maconchy and wistful Vaughan Williams to wild and stormy Clarke.

The Music

Elizabeth Maconchy was well-known for her sophisticated and intelligent string quartets. She described the interaction between players as an ‘impassioned argument’. In her sensuous, playful Clarinet Quintet the strings welcome the clarinet to the vigorous discussion.

Five decades earlier, Maconchy’s teacher Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote his glorious ‘Phantasy’ String Quintet. He added an extra viola to the ensemble, giving further richness to the texture.

Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio is one of the most powerful contributions to the chamber repertoire. Passionately romantic, turbulent and – at times – haunting, any performance is an unforgettable experience.

The Performers

Describe by The Times as ‘the yardstick by which other British chamber groups are measured’, the Nash Ensemble bring their customary precision and fire to this exceptional programme of British music.

It was all so inventive, so colourful, and so lively – so alive.
