The Villa-Lobos Event is a multimedia concert celebrating Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, whose work was deeply inspired by childhood and the natural world. The programme is conceived, directed and performed by Brazilian pianist Marcelo Bratke, exploring how Villa-Lobos created a unique musical language reflecting Brazil’s cultural diversity.

Alongside solo piano works, the concert features selections from Guia Prático, Villa-Lobos’s landmark educational cycle for youth choir and piano. Performed in Portuguese for the first time outside Brazil, these pieces are presented by the Finchley Children’s Choir, conducted by Grace Rossiter, with Bratke at the piano, drawn from the original collection of 137 songs composed during the 1940s and 1950s.

The evening concludes with Four Songs of the Amazon Forest for soprano, piano and youth choir, featuring Brazilian soprano Camila Provenzalle. Immersive video scenography by Brazilian artist Mariannita Luzzati offers a vivid, poetic portrait of Brazilian identity through music, art, and education.

This event is part of the UK/Brazil Season of Culture 2025–26, a year-long cultural programme between the two countries led by the British Council and Brazil’s IGR and with the support of Ambassador Antonio Patriota and the Brazilian Embassy.
