The Concert

A spotlight on the piano duet: a programme of stimulating, sparkling and sometimes subversive works from three different centuries, as part of Seong-Jin Cho’s Artist Portrait with the LSO.

The Music

Mozart thoroughly enjoyed the form of piano duet, writing his first at the age of only nine. His later Sonata K497, composed at the height of his powers, is one of the finest in the repertoire. Equally rewarding for both players, the Sonata is graceful, tender, and frequently playful.

Rihm, one of the most prolific composers of recent decades, turned his attention to music for four hands in the 1970s. On the surface his waltzes sound conventional and touched with nostalgia; yet a thoroughly modern dissonance curdles the sweetness of the harmonies, giving the music a slightly surreal edge.

Schubert’s Fantasia in F minor is not only a great piano duet, but one of his most important and substantial pieces. Published posthumously, its emotional state ranges from gentle melancholy to intense, fiery passion to serene lyricism.

The Performers

Seong-Jin Cho and Sunwook Kim, exceptional young soloists and close friends, demonstrate their flair for chamber music in this intriguing and intimate repertoire.
