The Concert

Shadows, echoes and deep romance: two evocative works for piano and strings speak to each other across the centuries.

The Music

My Shadow was inspired by Robert Louis Steven’s enigmatic poem. A shadow follows, imitates, grows or shrinks depending on the time of day. In Donghoon Shin’s piece, the piano ‘shadows’ the strings: following, imitating, occasionally dominating, sometimes disappearing. At the end it haunts the ensemble with an eerie persistence.

Brahms’s Piano Quartet is a mighty achievement, its four movements building in momentum towards the exuberant finale. The second movement contains an echo of Robert Schumann’s ‘Clara’ melody. Both men loved this remarkable pianist-composer, and she performed the piano part at the Quartet’s premiere.

The Performers

The extraordinary pianist Seong-Jin Cho frequently performs the music of his friend Donghoon Shin, finding it fresh and innovative, yet also deeply Romantic. He has found a further affinity with the similarly Romantic music of Brahms. He is joined in this performance by some outstanding string players from the LSO.
