Fractured Light

From Stravinsky’s esoteric neo-Classicism to Strauss’ Romantic lyricism, Shostakovich’s profound grief and Silvestrov’s luminous reflections, this programme explores the 20th century through dialogue.

The programme traces the relationship between violin and piano through four distinctive voices. Stravinsky’s Duo Concertant is the only work he wrote for this combination of instruments, which play their roles independently of each other in homophony. The music is very stark and sombre; even in the lighter moments, the spiky dissonance is never far away. Richard Strauss follows with sweeping lyricism and rich Romantic expression, demanding both virtuosity and intimate dialogue between the performers, with much counterpoint.

Shostakovich wrote his Sonata for the birthday of violinist David Oistrakh, and it reflects their relationship and the reality of musicians in the Soviet Union. Single lines, slow development and accents punctuate the 35-minute structure. Silvestrov’s music of remarkable stillness and poetic simplicity is needed to round out this intense programme.

Rather than seeking dramatic resolution, these miniatures invite reflection, allowing echoes of the past to linger in luminous, suspended sound. Together, these works explore conversation and conflict as the sound world changes around them.
