The Fidelio Orchestra is joined by pianist Elisabeth Brauß, a former BBC New Generation Artist, for Ludwig Van Beethoven’s most iconic Piano Concerto and Johannes Brahms’ First Symphony.
Written at the peak of the the composer’s middle period, this work blurs the line between a classical concerto and a symphony for piano and orchestra, whilst alternating the intimacy of chamber music with large symphonic sound. It is a model that Brahms surely had vividly in mind when working on his Second Piano Concerto. The other work on the programme is Brahms’ First Symphony, which enjoys sort of a legendary status in the classical repertoire. Its laborious compositional history sets an example for the struggle that composers had to face when trying to find satisfactory musical material that would fit within the classical form, which Brahms considered to be sacred.
Change of Programme
In a change to printed listings, the programme for this concert has changed. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No 6 will no longer be performed. It has been replaced by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 and Johannes Brahms Symphony No 1.
