Sir Simon Rattle: Betsy Jolas & Mahler

A song of the night, and the promise of dawn.

As a counterpoint to Wozzeck, Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra present the fantastic accents of Mahler’s Seventh Symphony, oscillating between night-time homage to nature and caricature of military bands. After the song of the earth, Das Lied von der Erde, at the Festival in 2021, here is the song of the night.

This symphonic evening opens with one of the very first performances of a serene work by Betsy Jolas, which the Festival is co-commissioning as part of a portrait dedicated to her.

Betsy Jolas’ Ces belles années… is presented with the support of Diaphonique, Franco-British fund for classical contemporary music in partnership with the SACEM, the Friends of the French Institute Trust, the British Council, the Institut français, the Institut français du Royaume-Uni, the Centre national de la musique, Creative Scotland and the Salabert Fondation.
