The Concert

Violinist Janine Jansen showcases Britten’s soulful concerto before the LSO launches into Copland’s emotionally intense symphony.

The Music

There’s a sparky energy and bittersweet lyricism to Britten’s 1939 Violin Concerto that nods to Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. But this is also a deeply personal work that helped boost Britten’s international reputation.

Copland’s Third Symphony, completed in 1946, is a vast and beautiful work of sprawling landscapes, offering early audiences a glint of optimism as the war came to an end. The final movement features the composer’s inspirational Fanfare for the Common Man.

The Performers

One of today’s most expressive and technically impressive violinists, Janine Jansen has made Britten’s Concerto her own in recent years. The LSO will bring to life Copland’s vast, descriptive work that calls also for an impressively large battery of percussion instruments.
