The Concert
Yuja Wang takes on Prokofiev’s electrifying Piano Concerto No 3 before Rachmaninoff’s tempestuous Symphony No 2, full of Romantic ardour.
The Music
Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No 3 dazzles with sparkling virtuosity, wit and lyrical charm. The LSO gave the UK premiere in 1922 with Prokofiev himself as soloist, conducted by Albert Coates and later made the first recording of the concerto in 1932 at Abbey Road Studios – again with the composer at the piano.
The contrasting second half features Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No 2, with a stirring Adagio at its centre.
The Performers
Chief Conductor of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads this all‑Russian programme, with star pianist Yuja Wang bringing her superlative technique and dynamism to Prokofiev.
