Bernstein’s Overture: Candide bursts with wit, energy and sparkling orchestration, capturing the satirical spirit of Voltaire’s classic tale in a whirlwind of musical brilliance.

Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No 2 is one of the most powerful and technically challenging of all. Listen out for moments in the opening movement that test the soloist’s stamina to its limits, and a helter-skelter finale that never lets up.

Copland’s own Third Symphony, completed in 1946, is a vast and beautiful work of sprawling landscapes, offering early audiences a glint of optimism as the war came to an end. The final movement features the composer’s inspirational Fanfare for the Common Man.
