The Concert

Violinist Janine Jansen revels in Mozart’s ‘Turkish’ Violin Concerto, before conductor Nathalie Stutzmann reveals the sublime joy in Bruckner’s epic Fifth.

The Music

Mozart wrote all five of his violin concertos aged just 19. No 5, the ‘Turkish’, is the best of them, a dazzling showcase for the soloist, full of memorable tunes. Listen out for the extraordinary final movement where Mozart interrupts the music’s graceful mood with a wild, percussive section that imitates the sounds of a Turkish band.

An enormous cathedral in sound, Bruckner’s heavenly Symphony No 5 is a deeply personal expression of his Christian faith. It’s also one of his most finely wrought, its final movement dominated by a magnificent fugue.

The Performers

Dutch violinist Janine Jansen combines a sweetness of tone with technical precision, perfectly suited to Mozart’s filigree elegance. And the French conductor Nathalie Stutzmann brings her renowned passion for Bruckner to bear on the magnificent Fifth.
