The Concert

A spotlight on Romanticism with three beautifully contrasting pieces: Liszt in fine form, late Mendelssohn and ‘Great’ Schubert.

The Music

Franz Liszt’s Les préludes is like a mini symphony: small in scale, but huge in emotional power, bringing to life themes of love and the natural world. Felix Mendelssohn’s last concerto is perhaps his most famous. The violin takes charge from the second bar with the first of many glorious themes.

Schubert pours his orchestral experience and melodic genius into his last completed symphony (the ‘Great’) – a suitably grand final word.

The Performers

Conductor Daniele Rustioni and violinist Francesca Dego make their LSO Barbican debuts with this programme. They are the perfect partners for the LSO’s characteristic mix of grace and power.

Life in every fibre, colour in the finest shadings, meaning everywhere.
