Kick-start your evening with a Half Six Fix concert. One piece in a 60-minute concert, introduced by the performers, with screens in the hall to bring you closer to the action.

The Programme

Begin your evening with the gauzy, sensuous soundscape of Ravel’s pastoral ballet, as Sir Antonio Pappano introduces and conducts Daphnis and Chloé.

In turn-of-the-century Paris, Ravel composed a ballet about ancient Greece for a Russian dance company. The result was music of fluid, diaphanous beauty, a languid drama of danger and desire. Confronting its strange, modern rhythms, the dancers are said to have chanted the name of Ballet Russes impresario ‘Ser-gei Dia-ghi-lev’ to stay on beat.

But Ravel’s choreographic symphony, complete with wordless chorus and even a wind machine, has stood the test of time.

The Performers

Sir Antonio Pappano, Chief Conductor Designate, and the LSO unfurl the story of the young lovers in an enchanting interplay of rhythm and colour. The choral phenomenon Tenebrae contribute their unforgettable sound.

I must tell you that I’ve just had an insane week: preparation of a ballet libretto for the next Russian season. Almost every night, work until 3am. What complicates things is that [choreographer] Fokine doesn’t know a word of French, and in Russian I only know how to swear.’ – A letter written by Ravel while composing Daphnis and Chloé
