The Concert
What would your favourite film be like without music? Would the action still feel exciting, the characters still feel brave, or the magic truly take off? Music and the Movies is a fun, family-friendly concert that reveals just how important music is to the stories we see on screen.
You’ll hear thrilling music from Pirates of the Caribbean, How to Train Your Dragon and The Polar Express, all performed by the London Symphony Orchestra – the very Orchestra whose playing has helped bring Harry Potter, Star Wars and countless other films to life.
But this isn’t just a concert – it’s a behind-the-scenes musical adventure! We’ll discover how film scores are written, what it’s like when the LSO records a soundtrack in the studio, and we’ll even get to sing with the Orchestra and the London Youth Choir in one of the most thrilling works ever written!
LSO Family Concerts are a fun, informative way for families to experience live music together and learn more about the instruments of the orchestra. Each concert is based on a theme, with free workshops before the performance, and the opportunity for everyone to get involved by playing or singing along with the audience participation piece during the concert.
Pre-Concert Activities
Arrive early to take part in free craft and musical activities in the foyers ahead of the concert. Further details are below.
Please note that we are no longer able to offer a crèche facility for younger siblings at this concert.
Pre-Concert Activities
Please note that there is no online pre-booking of the activities taking place before the concert. There is no instrument participation during the concert – any instruments brought by audience members for pre-concert activities will need to be left in the cloakroom before the start of the performance.
Creative Music Making Workshop
12pm, 12.35pm, 1.10pm, 1.45pm, Level G Studio
Become a film composer for the afternoon with the chance to write and perform your own movie soundtrack. Led by Kizzy Brooks and a team of LSO musicians, this hands on workshop gives you the opportunity to get up close with the instruments in the orchestra and get creative writing and playing in your own world premiere!
Instruments are provided but participants are also welcome to bring their own to play if they wish.
Storytelling Workshop
12pm, 12.35pm, 1.10pm, 1.45pm, Fountain Room, Level G
Jordan the storyteller has a problem! Somewhere in the music there’s a film trying to happen – but what kind of film is it? A thriller? An adventure? A love story? A comedy? Jordan has no idea. He’s called in a talented team of musicians to help and now he needs YOU too. Together, can you listen to the clues in the music and build a brand new story, scene by scene – one that has never been told before?
Singing Workshop
12pm, 12.35pm, 1.10pm, 1.45pm, Freestage, Level G
Join singer Midge Parry and pianist Jo Smith to warm up our voices and learn Music and the Movies, our participatory song written especially for this concert.
