Barry Tuckwell was Principal Horn of the Orchestra from 1955–67. During that time was a Director (1957–66) and Chairman of the Board (1963–66). Barry arrived at the Orchestra during a time of great change, which included the creation of the LSO Trust with the Orchestra’s manager Ernest Fleischmann. This trust would help to finance tours, and provide the funding for sickness and holiday pay for the players.
Barry was also involved (alongside Fleischmann) in putting together the original proposal for the residency at the Barbican. He left the LSO in 1967 to pursue a solo career, and went on to become the world’s most recorded horn player with over 50 recordings to his name. Barry was also nominated at the Grammy Awards three times.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
