Postgraduate Study: Orchestral Artistry

Orchestral Artistry – Part of MMus/MPerf in Performance (Guildhall Artist Masters) at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

Guildhall’s Master of Music in Performance: Orchestral Artistry is a focused professional specialism for advanced string, wind, brass, and percussion players who are preparing for a career in orchestral performance. Designed to support the transition from conservatoire study to the professional world, the programme offers structured training, in a context akin to a professional environment.

Delivered in close collaboration with the musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra, the programme offers postgraduate students a chance to engage directly with the artistic and practical aspects of orchestral life. Students receive in-depth guidance through orchestral repertoire training, audition preparation, coaching sessions with LSO musicians, LSO rehearsal sit-ins, masterclasses, and participation in a variety of learning and community projects through LSO Discovery – as well as access to selected LSO rehearsals and concerts with a wide variety of visiting artists and conductors. Through these experiences, Orchestral Artistry students develop greater confidence, insight, and understanding of the expectations of the orchestral profession.

‘Getting to work with someone like Sir Simon Rattle – who you see at the Proms, who’s always in the news, and is such a huge figure in classical music – that’s an incredible opportunity that I never would have had if I hadn’t been on this course.’
