Features, videos and more with our Associate Artist

André J Thomas was appointed LSO Associate Artist for three years in May 2022. He is a leading specialist in African-American, choral and gospel music, and expands the canvas of musical styles that the LSO explores.

His concerts so far have brought together symphonic and US gospel traditions, with the Orchestra collaborating with hundreds of singers from the London community, and gospel stars. He has also conducted symphonic music by Carlos Simon, Wynton Marsalis and Joel Thompson. In Dr Thomas’ own words, ‘Gospel music does not apologise. It comes straight out, fiery and quick. It’s like lighting a firecracker – you start with a sizzle and that’s it.’

Reviews

‘Also remarkable was the orchestra’s high-octane abandon and punch: an absorption of the jazz spirit obviously helped by the American conductor André J Thomas, who’d be genial and inspiring even if he didn’t wear a violently red waistcoat and have a megawatt smile.’ ★★★★ The Times, Nov 2022

‘Three insights describe my interview with André J Thomas; a profound sense of humour, a deep love and passion for the gospel and spiritual music and finally, revealing unknown tenets about Black history and its relationships to Black music from before slavery to where we are in the present day.’ Marlene Cato writing in Keep the Faith, May 2022
