Passion. Poetry. Romance. Two exceptional artists in two impassioned masterworks: Christian Tetzlaff and Kiveli Dörken play violin sonatas by Beethoven and Franck.

The Programme

In the 19th century, emotions ran high, and composers of all nationalities brought ideals of passionate struggle even into the drawing room. Beethoven’s early violin sonata burns with the restless energy of a young genius in an age of revolution; two generations later, César Franck filled his only Violin Sonata with all the drama, grandeur and soaring, songful melody of a great romantic opera.

The Performers

Christian Tetzlaff’s way with Beethoven has been described as ‘breathtaking’ – and with a duo-partner as gifted and perceptive as the young German pianist Kiveli Dörken (a former student of Tetzlaff’s late, much-missed friend Lars Vogt) these two make ideal partners in music that demands – and rewards – playing that’s as intelligent as it is uninhibited.

‘What do I care for your wretched fiddle when I’m taking to my God?’ – Beethoven

Change of Performers and Programme

We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of pianist Lars Vogt, who was originally due to perform in this concert alongside Christian Tetzlaff.
