In this series, soloists and ensembles tease out the wit, warmth and wisdom of Haydn's music, pairing his greatest chamber works with pieces that bear the traces of his influence.

Ashley Riches and Joseph Middleton demonstrate the emotional power of the human voice. A selection of Haydn’s songs includes The Sailor’s Song whose jaunty rhythm evokes the rolling sea waves. Three songs by Hummel follow, including two inspired by old Scottish songs.

Schubert, often dubbed the master of the Lieder form, closes the programme with songs which range from the tender Die Sterne to the bracing Fischerweise.

Programme update
Please note that the selection of Hummel songs being performed has changed to those advertised in early listings.
