Contemplate the brief, boundless joy of life and the looming spectre of death in Mahler’s hugely poignant song cycle – a work every bit as epic in size and scope as his monumental symphonies.
Mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and tenor Andrew Staples join Sir Simon Rattle in what was our first performance at the Barbican in over a year, taking you on Mahler’s deeply personal journey. Written in the final years of his life and following the tragic death of his daughter, Mahler wrestles with the transience of life; contrasting moments of vivacity and happiness with deep introspection and melancholy through some of his most beautiful symphonic writing.
Recorded 9 May 2021, originally co-produced by the Barbican and London Symphony Orchestra
