Gerard McBurney, Mike Tutaj and the LSO bring Percy Aldridge Grainger – one of the strangest and most enigmatic of musicians – alive before our eyes and ears, celebrating his exuberant, pioneering music.

Percy Aldridge Grainger remains a fascinating enigma. His music fits no ordinary categories, is written for outrageously daring combinations of instruments, and yet is possessed of deep and unexpected poetry.

Grainger’s life was as colourful and unpredictable as his compositions. In this show, Simon Rattle and the LSO journey through the landscape of Grainger’s mind and imagination, exploring pieces from different periods of his career, against a background of dreamlike memories of his travels, fragments of recordings of his piano playing, and the mellifluous sound of his voice.

From the wealth of documentation produced during his lifetime, creative director Gerard McBurney and projection and sound designer Mike Tutaj bring this marvellous one-off composer alive before our eyes and ears, as the LSO celebrates his exuberant and pioneering music.
