The vibrant colours, sights and sounds of Italy emerge in many of Berlioz's works. The French composer spent time in the country as a student, following his success in the Prix de Rome composing competition (after three failed attempts, which include the unabashedly experimental Death of Cleopatra).

This influence can be heard in the Overture to Benvenuto Cellini, an opera based on the life of a Renaissance Florentine sculptor, and in Harold in Italy, the story of a dreamy character's wanderings in the Italian countryside, where he encounters a romantic serenade, a group of pilgrims and a gang of brigands.

Antoine Tamestit joins the Orchestra for Harold in Italy's famous solo viola role; the violist was described by The Scotsman as an 'impeccable soloist' in a recent performance of the work.
