The LSO’s Leader Roman Simovic, a product of the distinctive Russian school of violin playing and one of the foremost violinists of his generation, steps into the limelight in Glazunov’s popular Concerto, written for the great player and pedagogue Leopold Auer who trained violinists at the St Petersburg Conservatory for half a century. Balakirev’s seductively orientalist symphonic poem Tamara, inspired by the mountainous scenery of the Caucasus, and Rachmaninov’s First Symphony complete this all-Russian programme.
