André Previn and Anne-Sophie Mutter have always had time for chamber music in their busy careers, Previn combining this with composition. As Mutter says, ‘I have utmost admiration for André … his work is uniquely romantic and inspired by his immense knowledge of orchestration’. It is characteristic of Mozart’s quick brilliance that he should produce his five piano trios in a two-year period (1786–88), never to return to the form again, yet they are benchmark works in the genre. Mendelssohn’s First Piano Trio is one of his most popular chamber works; like Mozart, Mendelssohn was a child prodigy, Schumann dubbing him ‘the Mozart of the 19th century’.
