Barbican Concerts
LSO Futures: Futureworks for young composers
Suitable for 14- to 18-year-olds
Overview

Composition

Futures
This April, the London Symphony Orchestra will be celebrating new music through LSO Futures – a week of special events at the Barbican and LSO St Luke's including premieres, workshops, artist conversations and concerts. As part of this, we’re inviting a future generation of composers, aged 14–18, to join us for a day of composition workshops and glimpses behind the scenes.
The day is inspired by the music the LSO will be performing on 13 April, including a new LSO commission – Panufnik Variations. The work, based on a theme by Andrzej Panufnik and with an opening and conclusion by Colin Matthews, features a series of variations by nine alumni of LSO Discovery's Panufnik Composers Scheme.
What the day involves
In the morning, come and watch the London Symphony Orchestra rehearsing the music for the evening's concert – including Panufnik Variations – and meet the composers who have been involved in this brand new commission. In the afternoon, you will work with the LSO’s animateur Rachel Leach and players from the LSO to develop your own composition, leading to a performance in the Barbican foyers. To round off the day, come and watch the LSO’s evening concert with friends and family, featuring Panufnik Variations and works by Webern, Boulez and Debussy.
How to book
Tickets to participate in Futureworks are now sold out.
