Alongside a set of Strauss orchestral works being performed at the Barbican by conductors Nikolaj Znaider and Sir Mark Elder (on 1, 4 and 8 May), find out more about the composer whose work Also sprach Zarathustra was made forever infamous as the opening theme to Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

A day ticket includes a morning rehearsal at the Barbican with conductor Sir Mark Elder followed by a talk by Dr Barbara Eichner (Oxford Brookes University) and a performance of Strauss' moving Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings, performed by LSO players and Guildhall musicians, at LSO St Luke's.

Tickets: £17 (£13.50 concessions). Afternoon only from 2.30pm: £12 (no concessions)
